How to Configure the BMI Record on your DNS

Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) is a new standard that helps businesses strengthen brand recognition by displaying their logo directly in recipients’ inboxes. Properly configuring BIMI builds trust, enhances visibility, and reinforces your email’s legitimacy.

Verify SPF, DKIM, and DMARC

The first step is to ensure that SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are correctly configured and authenticated across all third-party services sending emails on behalf of your domain. These protocols are the foundation for setting up a BIMI record.

Create an SVG of your logo

The next step is to prepare the logo, which must be a recognizable brand representation that supports verification. BIMI requires a square-shaped logo in SVG format, free from scripts or external links.

Get a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) and PEM file

Once the logo is ready, request a VMC certificate from an approved provider. This certificate confirms the legitimacy of your logo.

Upload the PEM file

Upon approval of your VMC request, you will get a PEM file. Upload the file to your domain’s public web server.

Add a BIMI text record

Sign into your domain host, navigate to the page to update the DNS of your domain and add a new BIMI TXT record.
