DNS Record: How to Configure SPF

Sender Policy Framework (SPF) is a foundation in strengthening email deliverability and protecting your domain reputation. Properly configured SPF record reduces the chances of your emails being flagged as spam or rejected by recipient servers. The SPF record contains a list of all the mail servers, IP addresses, and third-party services authorized to send emails from your domain.

Steps to Configure an SPF Record

1- Check if SPF is already set up

  • Visit MXToolbox.com and select “SPF Record Lookup.”
  • If a record exists, review it for accuracy. If not, prepare a new one.
  • Always confirm with your email service provider (ESP) and domain host before creating or modifying SPF records.

2- Prepare your SPF record

  • Identify all email senders for your organization.
  • Some organizations rely on a single ESP, while others use multiple senders.
  • The SPF record will specify which providers are authorized to send on your behalf.

3- Add or update your SPF record

  • Log in to your domain host.
  • Navigate to the DNS management section.
  • Add or update the TXT record with the SPF information provided by your ESP.

Considerations for SPF Records

  • Your ESP should supply the SPF record format to add to your DNS.
  • If using multiple ESPs, put them into a single SPF entry.
  • If you use subdomains, configure SPF records for each subdomain.
  • Use DMARC reports to identify all senders linked to your domain.
